My objective for this area was to achieve a contemporary traditional ambiance that is both inviting and practical. By the way: I wish there existed a term for this segment of an open-plan home! It isn’t a breakfast nook nor a dining room, just a compact space situated between our kitchen and living area. Our former table was a white drop-leaf piece with coordinating chairs. It no longer aligned with my aesthetic and appeared rather worn. Given that our residence is open plan, and the breakfast table occupies a petite area between the living room and kitchen, I aimed to maintain a circular design. It facilitates an unobstructed pathway all around, and as a mother, I always favor furniture that lacks sharp edges!
Moreover, I intended to refresh the lighting fixture to something sleeker and more contemporary. I sought one with aged brass details that would harmonize with the chandelier in our dining area.
Lastly, I was keen on wishbone chairs! Instead of having them match the table, I preferred using two contrasting wood tones for a more eclectic appearance. With our walls, cabinets, and other furnishings being white, I envisioned adding some distinction with natural wood.

In addition, to pair with the chairs, I opted for the Hudson Round Dining Table. It is slightly smaller than our previous table, making it more suitable for the area. This round gray dining table features an X-shaped base for a contemporary aesthetic. Simultaneously, the brushed gray wood finish maintains a relaxed and somewhat rustic design. It serves as an excellent designer alternative for upscale tables!
3. Brass Eldridge Pendant with White Opal Glass
Recall how I spoke about matching the fixture with the dining room chandelier? I selected a pendant for the kitchen from the same lighting collection, which means the aged brass hues align perfectly! This is the Eldridge 1-light Aged Brass Pendant. The “opal” glass emits a pleasant radiance when illuminated, softening the overall aesthetic. You could also utilize two or three pendants above an island.
4. Centerpiece for a Gray Dining Table
At last, the greenery! These Frosted Green Willow Stems are simple to arrange and appear authentic. They enhance the circular gray breakfast table by introducing a natural aspect.
Always make sure to adjust the branches and stems of synthetic greenery to avoid an overly polished appearance. And here’s a suggestion: if vibrant greens don’t appeal to you, or if you’re simply seeking variety, opt for items featuring “frosted” in the title! The hue is less pronounced.
To summarize, I believe the circular gray dining table along with wishbone chairs has contributed to formulating a designer aesthetic without breaking the bank. This makeover has motivated me to persist in enhancing our kitchen! For instance, I have begun painting the interior doors! Making a house feel personalized takes time, and I’m in no rush, but it’s enjoyable to tailor this basic builder home to accommodate our family’s requirements and style.
