Powder Room Prior

Here’s a snapshot of our contractor-grade powder bath before. It was completely functional, but I aimed to infuse character and warmth. The good news is that a half bath transformation need not be costly!

I believe many individuals ponder how to adorn a powder room. Often, the smallest areas are the trickiest to address! Naturally, you can update the vanity and flooring if your budget allows for it. Yet, there are numerous fantastic solutions available on a budget!

Compact Half Bath Design Strategy

Not too long ago, I presented my powder room mood board. I find it beneficial to create a mood board when planning a space as it helps me finalize the color palette and overall design. While I don’t always purchase the exact items from the mood board, it serves as a useful reference point.

DIY Powder Room Transformation

Excited to see the big reveal? I am truly thrilled with how this compact half bath makeover came together! Here are all the details.

1. A Fresh Layer of Paint

The most labor-intensive DIY task for this powder room makeover was re-coating the walls. However, nothing creates a significant impression on a budget quite like a new layer of paint!

Personally, I typically opt for subdued shades over vivid hues as I find them soothing and easy to coordinate. Yet, I’ve also seen some stunning bright bathrooms, so really, anything works! I chose a medium green hue for a fresh yet inviting atmosphere.

Initially, I intended to employ the color Intrigue by Benjamin Moore for our half bath, but eventually selected Village Green by Behr because it is a Marquee shade. Behr’s Marquee hues are guaranteed to cover in a single coat, and the quality of the paint is commendable.

Pro tip: I always use this paint roller and this roller frame. Make sure to thoroughly load your roller with paint and work in smaller sections.

In this instance, there were a few spots that I touched up with a lighter second coat, being the perfectionist that I am! I opted for satin finish, but eggshell would also be suitable for a powder room.

2. Contemporary Style Faucet

Next, my father assisted me in swapping our half bath contractor-grade faucet for this contemporary style brushed nickel faucet.

Additionally, I refreshed the towel ring and toilet paper holder with brushed nickel fixtures to coordinate with the faucet. These updates alone made a considerable difference and customized the powder room feel!

3. Arched Frame Mirror

Lastly, a sizable wall mirror over the sink serves as a perfect focal point for a half bath. This rattan arched mirror was the piece that sparked my powder room transformation, and I adore the warmth and intrigue it contributes.

4. Brass Light Fixture

One element that we had replaced previously in this diminutive space was the contractor grade light fixture. I chose a brass wall sconce with exposed bulbs, positioned above the mirror. Alternative options for a half bath could include two wall sconces or pendant lights hanging on each side of a mirror.

Additionally, if you’re fortunate enough to have a window in your powder room, consider selecting a lovely privacy shade or curtains to filter the natural light.

5. Vintage Style Artwork

For the remainder of the half bath update, I managed to replicate several of the upscale elements from my mood board, while keeping to a budget.

Although I adored the McGee and Co art, I realized I could attain a comparable look with printable graphics (landscape artwork, bird illustrations) and conventional frames (black frame, similar wooden frame). The wall space above the toilet serves as an ideal spot to showcase framed art that can be switched out according to the seasons.

6. Attractive Hand Towels

Another wonderful method to revitalize your powder room is by incorporating fresh hand towels. This striped towel from the Hearth and Hand collection at Target brings in just a touch of farmhouse appeal.

7. Compact Decorative Items

I also discovered designer replicas for the ceramic vase, dried flowers, and hand soap featured on my powder room mood board. These petite decorative pieces bring visual allure without occupying much counter space.

8. Bathroom Vanity and Basin

Currently, my aim is to transform our powder room without replacing the builder-grade vanity or adding a new basin. However, I am enamored with the look of a vintage pedestal sink, so perhaps in the future!

It’s always enjoyable to compare the mood board with the finished space, so here is a side-by-side evaluation. Overall, I believe the final appearance closely resembles the design concept!

Further Small Half Bath Refresh Ideas

There are countless methods to rejuvenate a powder room economically, so I wanted to share a few more suggestions below!

1. Floating Shelf

Although I did not install wall shelves in our half bath, the space above the toilet presents a superb opportunity for them. You can utilize floating shelves to keep extra toilet paper, hand soap, and lotion if there isn’t storage space under the sink. A floating shelf is also ideal for small decorative elements or a diffuser.

2. Statement Wallpaper

If you wish to elevate your powder room walls beyond a fresh coat of paint, eye-catching wallpaper can make a significant difference!

Pro tip: Determine which type of wallpaper application method suits you best. You can select from peel and stick, pre-pasted, or unpasted. I have utilized peel and stick wallpaper for accent walls in both my entryway and my daughter’s space, and personally, I really enjoy it, but everyone has their unique preference.

Curious about the kind of pattern to choose? Consider delicate floral wallpaper for a cottage aesthetic, or vibrant colors or stripes for contemporary areas. Here are some stunning wallpaper options:

3. Wall Designs with Molding

Another excellent approach to introduce visual appeal to a half bath is through wall molding or wainscoting.

For instance, consider simple picture frame molding like what I implemented in our main bathroom. Alternatively, you could apply bead board or shiplap on the lower part of the wall.

4. Washable Powder Room Mat

If you have adequate floor area, a compact washable mat is a fantastic complement for a half bath. We own multiple Ruggable mats in our residence and while they represent a financial commitment, the standard is significantly superior to less expensive alternatives that I’ve tried.

Here are my preferred selections!

5. Tiled Flooring

We didn’t change the flooring in our powder room, but I adore the appearance of patterned or striking tile to create a focal point.

6. Knobs and Fixtures

Lastly, changing out cabinet knobs and drawer handles is an inventive and economical method to revitalize your half bath.
