Black Front Door Makeover

Greetings, pals! Today I’m presenting an economical entryway transformation. I coated the interior of our front door black to introduce personality and warmth to a compact entry space. I’m thrilled you’re here, let’s dive in!

Front Door Before - Gray Walls
Before

Excuse the iPhone snaps, but here’s our front door “before.” The walls were painted in Sherwin Williams Passive with a flat finish, which looked quite poor after two and a half years. Beyond the paint, this area merely felt barren. My aim was to incorporate style and texture while maintaining a straightforward and practical appearance.

Since last winter, I have gradually coated all of our downstairs walls Behr Polar Bear in eggshell, and these were the last gray walls (aside from those that extend two stories—we will ultimately hire someone to address those!). So, I played Baby Shark for the kids 😉 and managed to get these walls painted one morning a few weeks back.

As you probably know by now, I adore white in terms of decoration. The majority of our home is white or off-white 😉 However, this was too much white even for my taste! Coating the door black had already been on my mind, inspired by Kelly at Hartley Home Design, and once I saw the white walls, I knew I had to make the leap!

The exterior of our front door was already black, so I merely selected a shade that resembled it for the interior. I opted for Limousine Leather by Behr with a satin finish.* It’s remarkable how a splash of paint can transform! The black trim truly enhances the area and imparts a more bespoke feel.

*A note for those curious about painting a door: I utilized the Marquee line, which claims to offer one coat coverage, yet I still required two coats. Honestly, I had no issue with that. It was a small zone, and with all the detailed work around the trim, plus the glossy finish on the door, one coat would have been somewhat miraculous. Two coats appear wonderful, and I still only needed a quart of paint!
