Our concrete patio transformation commenced last year when we added this sought-after 10′ x 12′ wooden gazebo, available at Wayfair. It has significantly enhanced our backyard!
If you’re an experienced DIYer, you might be able to assemble and install a gazebo kit independently. While I enjoy tackling smaller DIY tasks, this one felt a bit beyond what I wanted to handle.
We decided to enlist a local landscaping company to put the gazebo together and anchor it to our concrete patio. A team of three took two days to finish, just to give you a sense of the workload. Nevertheless, the total cost for the gazebo plus installation was much less than a quote we received for a custom-built structure.
My aim for 2026 was to complete the area with gazebo lighting, additional shade, and decor to make our backyard patio feel like a cozy sanctuary.
Outdoor Rug
The simplest way to cover concrete is with an outdoor rug. Outdoor rugs can be crafted from various materials, but I usually prefer 100% polypropylene because it withstands the elements.

Rug sizing tip:Always measure your area before purchasing a rug! In a dining area, ensure that the legs of the dining chairs remain on the rug, even when pulled out. For a lounge seating area, confirm that at least the front legs of all furniture will rest on the rug.

Outdoor Roller Shade
While our gazebo has brought so much utility to our back patio, we needed to seek a solution for providing extra shade during the late afternoon and evening hours. The sun sets directly behind our home, and we lack any large trees in our backyard for shade.

Upon evaluating all the choices, I opted for a 27′ strand with 12 bulbs. I arranged them in a “V” patterned layout within the gazebo. The illumination is ideal for a snug atmosphere in the evenings. If more intense outdoor lighting is desired, I would recommend employing multiple strands for increased coverage.
I appreciate that the lights are solar-powered, which means there is no need to connect them to an outlet! I secured the solar panel on the side of our gazebo where it would capture the maximum sunlight. The hanging lights illuminate automatically as soon as dusk falls.

Outdoor Decor for a Patio
To conclude our concrete patio transformation, I selected just a few embellishments to refresh our backyard.
Our metal dining table is a few years old and appears slightly worn. I may consider spray painting it next year, but for now, I’m adorning it with a beautiful floral tablecloth for a renewed appearance.

As stated earlier, I chose the straightforward option of an outdoor rug to enhance our current slab patio. If you’re on a tight budget or prefer something low maintenance, a rug is a simple way to achieve the goal.
Pro tip: Before placing down the rug, I hosed off the patio to make the concrete appear as appealing as possible. You can also utilize a pressure washer, but ensure that you don’t use excessive pressure and damage the concrete.
