Elf Departure Ideas
This signifies our fourth year of hosting an elf in our home for December, and when I assert that I’ve genuinely researched every elf concept available, I truly mean it!
I’ve previously shared our last-minute ideas which encompass all the genuinely tried and true concepts that have proven effective in our household, but personally, I like to ensure that we commemorate our final elf day.
Depending on how many tasks I’ve been juggling in December, this can either be an extravagant last celebration or a quick setup.
Whether you feel a tinge of sadness about your elf’s departure or are eager to celebrate their send-off (or both because parenthood can be peculiar like that), these ideas should assist in making your elf’s farewell a tad more special and something your children will cherish.
What Day Does The Elf Bid Farewell?
Traditionally, your elf typically departs from your residence on Christmas Eve (December 24th). This indicates that the last evening your elf will relocate is December 23rd.
Simple Elf Departure Ideas
Suggestions that necessitate a small amount of foresight but remain straightforward and quick to arrange.
Christmas Eve Package
If you have Christmas Eve packages (or if it’s a custom you’d like to initiate), why not have your elf deliver them on their final day?
Great items to include in Christmas Eve packages are pajamas, slippers, Christmas tales, candy, bubble bath, and anything that encourages children to retire for the night and enjoy a restful sleep!
Elf Packages a Suitcase
Have your elf leave a farewell note alongside an elf-sized suitcase as a prop.
We’ve executed this as a last-minute farewell idea before simply because one of my kids decided they didn’t want our elf to journey back to the North Pole empty-handed, so we ensured we packed them some mini-brands goodies and a farewell note from my kids.
Donut Worry
We’ve used donuts to welcome our elf’s arrival before, but there’s no reason why you can’t reverse the situation and use it as a departure idea instead.
Simply leave a note saying ‘donut worry, I’ll be back next year’ and present some festive donuts as a treat.
Elf’s Farewell Game
As one who has hosted an elf for Christmas several years, our tradition now is that on our elf’s final day, they organize a game to have one last moment of enjoyment with my kids before departing.
My children adore this since it’s enjoyable and they receive treats (and it’s possibly a bit extravagant), and I appreciate it because, as long as I plan ahead, it’s extremely quick to set up the evening prior. It works best if you have multiple children involved.
Simply gather a bunch of paper cups and turn them upside down; beneath each cup, place a little treat like chocolate coins or Christmas candies, or hide one of your elf’s favorite ‘treats,’ which in our case are Brussels sprouts.
Children can take turns lifting the cups and claim whatever is underneath.
Elf Departs
If your child possesses any toy cars, create a final festive scene by placing your elf in it in front of your door, prepared to leave.
No cars? You could arrange an elf sleigh or even an elf-sized airplane for their departure.
Adorable & Heartwarming Farewell Day Ideas
The most charming concepts for your elf to say goodbye, ensuring your Christmas is especially memorable.
Elf Leaves a Farewell Note
Leave a note from your elf expressing gratitude for their stay and that they eagerly anticipate returning next year. You may also want to include a treat from your elf.
Elf Hugs
If one of the customs for having an elf that your family adheres to is that children are not allowed to touch their elf, then why not make an exception for the last day?
Leave a message with your elf indicating they would adore receiving hugs on their final day before returning to see Santa.
Baking Day
Have your elf prepare the ingredients for baking some festive goodies for your family to create together. Perhaps you could bake cookies for Santa.
Whimsical Elf Departure Concepts
Crisp-mas Tree
This is a concept I implemented in our second year of having the elf visit our home, and it was quite popular with my children as it not only provided fun but also ensured they had plenty of snacks to get them through the holidays!
All I did was craft a sign from our elf saying ‘Merry Crispmas’ and adorned our Christmas tree with packets of crisps. In the USA? I believe Merry Chipmas would suffice just as well.

Toilet Roll Decorations
We’re still at the phase where wrapping things in toilet roll amuses my kids, and actually, this is a really quick elf idea as well!
Just leave a message from your elf stating they wanted to assist in decorating before departing and then grab some toilet paper rolls to embellish.
Winding them around your Christmas tree is always a solid choice, but if you prefer to decorate your living room or another area instead, feel free to do so.

Remarkable ideas that help maintain the magic of Christmas alive.
Leave an Elfie
If your child is likely to miss their elf, why not provide them with a keepsake from the time they spent together?
If you’re
By organizing your elf’s departure beforehand, you could capture several images during the month of your elf’s escapades in your home. However, if you’ve procrastinated (which is typically me), simply snap a picture of them in a festive setting, such as on your Christmas tree.
Utilize an instant camera or print out the photographs for them to discover.
Feeling adventurous? Why not attempt to place your elf under your child’s arm while they slumber and take a snap of them cuddling together?
Tidy Up Your Home
In our inaugural year, I went a bit overboard on our final day of hosting our Elf’s visit. It required some effort, and frankly, I doubt I’ve ever surpassed it, but the expressions on my children’s faces made it all worthwhile.
I grabbed some elf-themed gift wrapping and wrapped as many items in our living room as I could manage in 20 minutes. For me, that included our fireplace, several photographs, and wall decorations, which consumed two rolls of wrapping paper.
I’ve encountered images on Facebook of individuals who wrap entire spaces (sofas, televisions, rugs…) but keep in mind that with Christmas Eve the following evening, you might want to avoid being up all night wrapping items.
Last-Minute Elf Farewell Concepts
Rapid ideas for when you’re pressed for time or forgot to relocate your elf for the final occasion.
Elf Departs in an Envelope
Take an envelope or mailing bag and jot down Santa’s address on it so your elf is prepared to return swiftly via elf mail.
Place your elf inside with their head protruding.
Flour Notes
For a playful way to leave a message, sprinkle a bit of flour on a surface like your dining table and carefully write a note in it such as ‘see you next year.’
I’ll Miss Shoe
We’re always fans of humorous puns, so why not place your elf into one of your child’s shoes and leave a note that says ‘I’ll miss shoe!’
It’s A Wrap
Wrap your elf either in wrapping paper with their head sticking out or in a tortilla wrap and leave a note saying ‘It’s a wrap! See you next year.’
What To Do When Your Elf Depart
As one parent to another, the most crucial task is to place your elf somewhere secure and remember its location. While it’s almost a rite of passage for parents to forget where they’ve concealed their elf from one year to the next, it’s a stressful situation you’d probably prefer to avoid!
Make certain your elf is out of sight for your kids, that your partner won’t mistakenly dispose of it, and ensure your dog won’t discover it either.
