Visiting the sandy shore with a young child can be incredibly enjoyable and enlightening as you observe their amazement at this novel adventure. We initially brought our little one to the shore when he was just a few weeks old, which is one of the perks of residing near the coastline. Nonetheless, it wasn’t until our second child arrived that we incorporated beach outings into our routine and vacations. A significant part of the enjoyment comes from the beach games you can start to introduce to your little ones. After sharing our Top Tips for Taking Toddlers to the Beach, we have compiled below some of our favorite Beach Activities for Toddlers that the entire family will appreciate.

Activities and Games to Enjoy at the Beach with Toddlers
I’ve encountered lists filled with hundreds of suggestions for activities to engage in at the beach with toddlers, but I prefer to keep things straightforward and utilize items you already have. We always pack some sand toys for the beach, along with a bat, ball, and our kite, which is often tucked away in the back of the vehicle, regardless of the weather! Thus, these beach games are uncomplicated, require minimal preparation, and you likely already possess the necessary equipment for a fantastic time with the little ones.
Water Relay Competitions
Our top choice for staying refreshed and having a blast, regardless of age, is water relay competitions. To make it a bit more equitable, we utilize the cups we bring for the picnic, ensuring everyone uses the same size and fills up buckets. HOWEVER… the larger the individual, the farther they need to run since tiny legs can’t travel as far or as quickly as adults. Then, Ready, SET, GO!!! Dash from the ocean to the buckets as many times as needed to fill it up; the victor is the one who fills their bucket first.
Just a heads up that this can become quite competitive, even among toddlers. But keep an eye on Dad or Grandad, as they can be the worst.
Sand Castle Bowling
In my experience, toddlers adore nothing more than toppling things – towers, blocks, and sandcastles. So let them have a turn at constructing some sand castles. Quickly build a few (3 or 4) sandcastles, grab your beach ball or ball from a bat and ball set, and knock them down.

How Deep Can You Dig
A challenge for the family – but make it equitable, hand the toddlers a spade and the adults a spoon! Within a designated timeframe, how deep can you excavate a hole in the sand? The spoon will level the playing field for the little ones to dig as much as possible.
Musical Towels
We always bring a bundle of towels along to the beach, and at least one of us has a smartphone loaded with music. So dancing and enjoying music is a breeze. Musical towels was my little one’s preferred game when we ventured out with friends and family. However, you might need to remind some of the adults that it’s beneficial to allow the little ones to win occasionally.

Sculptures Made from Sand
I vividly recall as a child going to the beach, and after we grew bored of crafting sand castles, the adults would unleash their creativity with the structures they built, from mermaid tails on us to boats and race cars. We all collaborated to create unique constructions! It turns out this tradition stuck, and when we returned to the beach for the first time as a large family, my brother and Rainy Day Dad constructed Star Wars structures for the kids to climb on and play Star Wars!
Construct a Dam and River Races
As mentioned, toddlers enjoy knocking down things, so organize a game to create a river to the ocean. Collaborate in teams of adults and children to excavate a river with a pool at the top and a dam. Fill the “pool” with water and then… On Your Marks… Get Set GO! Smash the dam and see whose river reaches the ocean first.
Treasure Hunt on the Beach
There are two distinct ways to enjoy this: you could either hide some treasure close to where you are sitting on the beach for everyone to discover – ensure it’s sizable enough that it won’t vanish or organize a beach scavenger hunt for everyone to partake in. Can they find or spot a Pink Beach Towel, a person wearing a yellow polka dot bikini – you can make it as silly or as normal as you wish.
Why not print out these splendid Beach Scavenger Hunts over at Ruffles and Rainboots, where the toddlers will adore the picture card and your older kids will appreciate the list of items, keeping both entertained.
