There’s nothing quite like a cozy chair and a beloved book. While I enjoy listening to many audiobooks during cleaning or walking, recently I’ve been eager to sit down and read more frequently. Reducing screen time and immersing myself in a good book has proven beneficial for my mental well-being. Thus, I opted to use a small area in the corner of our master bedroom for a reading nook!

Ideal Locations for a Cozy Reading Nook
Most individuals don’t possess an elaborate home library equipped with built-in shelves (a someday aspiration of mine!), yet you can still fashion a delightful space for reading.
To get started, selecting the prime location for your reading space is essential. I chose a corner of my bedroom, but you could also carve out a designated area in a sitting room, home office, or intimate living room.
Alternatively, consider removing the doors from an unused closet to free up a bit more space. You could also transform a walk-in closet if the space isn’t needed, as I did with my cloffice! I appreciate that it is separate from the rest of the house.
When determining where to situate your own nook, think about the noise level of the room. A quieter area will enhance your reading experience as you can more easily escape into your book.
Furniture for a Cozy Reading Nook
Once you have designated a location for your reading space, an excellent starting point for designing the area is selecting furniture.
Inviting Chair for a Cozy Nook
A primary feature of a snug reading nook is comfortable seating. We already had this soft armchair in our bedroom, and I decided to keep it for my reading area as it is very cozy and inviting.

If you aim to invest in just one item for your cozy corner, a comfy chair is the ideal choice. Even if you already possess a window seat–such a delightful feature–it can be beneficial to have a larger chair where you can get cozy.
Compact Reading Nook Side Table
Furthermore, having a small table beside your reading chair is quite beneficial. This is the ideal spot for a cup of tea and your favorite novel.
I utilized a small end table (similar), but you might also consider a larger side table, or a wooden tray that can rest on the chair arm.
A compact side table is also the perfect place to hold reading glasses and other necessities within easy access! For additional storage, select a table with a shelf or drawer beneath.
Ottoman or Footrest for Enhanced Comfort
Additionally, a fantastic way to enhance the comfort of your reading area is to incorporate an ottoman or footrest.
I grabbed a white boucle ottoman (similar) from my office and think I’ll need to order another one since it’s lovely to elevate my feet while reading. Visually, it also makes the corner look more purposeful and complete.
Certain comfy reading chairs (like this one) come with matching ottomans. I also adore this striped ottoman and this green velvet ottoman!
Bookshelves and Wall Shelving
If you are a passionate reader, you likely possess a collection of books. If there’s room in your cozy reading nook, include a bookshelf or wall shelf where you can store your next engaging read.
My bedroom corner lacked space for built-in shelves or a traditional bookshelf, but I did add this corner wall shelf (similar) where I can keep a stack of books and a few decorative items.
However, if your reading space has a bit more room, think about incorporating bookshelves! I found some splendid options from Wayfair. I adore this corner bookshelf, or you could use wall ledges to exhibit books.
If you haveplentyof space and are uncertain about how to utilize it, consider an accent cabinet or tall storage cabinet. This way, you can keep all your books nearby and have ample room for a table lamp or decor.
Charming Rolling Cart for Nooks
Lastly, if you’re utilizing a small corner like I am, but still desire a spot to keep your books, consider a rolling cart. This is a flexible choice, as you can easily move it aside or transport your book selection to a different area.
This sage green rolling cart could be an excellent selection. It features various shelves for organizing books, pens, reading glasses, and other essential items for your reading nook within easy reach.

Cushions and a Cozy Throw
To begin, why not make your snug area even more welcoming with plush cushions and throw blankets? Sometimes, you simply want to feel enveloped in a cozy nest, away from the pressures of life. (At least I do!)
I picked this circular boucle pillow from Wayfair. It carries a nice weight, and it’s absolutely adorable. I place it on my lap to serve as a support for my book or e-reader. Alternatively, opt for cozy cushions to provide back support. I’m fond of this floral lumbar pillow or this striped cushion.
For cozy throws, a faux fur option is for sure my favorite. Conversely, I adore the look of a chunky knit throw!
Proper Lighting for Reading
Next, a perfect reading nook requires adequate lighting. Ambient light creates a cozy vibe, but you will also need some brighter illumination to prevent eye strain.
I selected a corner in the bedroom next to the window to ensure plenty of natural illumination. Additionally, I added this contemporary plug-in wall light for evening reading or on gloomy days. Its arms are fully adjustable, and you can turn the shades to face either up or down.
Another alternative for reading lights would be a floor lamp if space permits. Task lighting is fantastic since you can modify the angle of the shade. Alternatively, create gentle ambiance with a fabric shade.
Conversely, you could suspend a pendant light from the ceiling to serve as a focal point in your cozy nook. This rattan pendant or this large paper lantern would both add charm!
Lastly, you might want to enhance your reading area with fairy lights. These are battery-powered and can be arranged on a wall shelf or entwined in a faux plant for atmospheric lighting. You could also go all-in with string lights like these star lights or these globe lights.
Wall Decor for Your Cozy Reading Nook
Alongside wall shelves, I decided to incorporate some floral canvas artwork in my reading nook. This piece came in a trio and was quite affordable for the large size. If you favor modern art prints, take a look at this abstract artwork.
Another approach for cozy nook wall decor is to create a gallery wall. I’ve designed galleries in multiple spaces in our residence, and it’s always a delightful project. Consider a grid gallery wall featuring family photos, or a more diverse gallery wall showcasing vintage style paintings.

Storage Baskets for a Cozy Nook
Another suggestion for a snug little reading nook is a basket for blankets, cushions, slippers, or a cozy sweater.
I’m quite fond of baskets with lids since they allow you to conceal items while still keeping them easily reachable. This is a smart choice if you have available floor space. Additionally, they introduce a warm texture!
In my bedroom’s reading corner, I added these smaller scalloped baskets for storing books, crafting materials, and other belongings. They fit perfectly atop my wardrobe. I appreciate that the scalloped lids can also function as trays! So adorable.
Bonus suggestion:If you lack space for baskets, consider a blanket ladder for your throws and sweaters!
