Before: Chaotic Craft Closet

Our front hall closet turned into a toy and craft space during the pandemic. It was convenient to have storage right across from our dining area because that’s where we create!

Recently, I opted to enhance the closet’s functionality and aesthetics. It was challenging for the kids to access the stacked bins filled with blocks, and the art supplies were often disorganized. Eager to see the transformation?

Can you even fathom this is the same tiny closet? It is considerably more orderly, practical, and lovely! I’ve even started referring to it as “The Magic Closet” because it fills me with joy and enthusiasm to engage in projects with my children. These truly are the good old days!

To initiate this transformation, I emptied the closet entirely, including the wire shelf. After patching the holes, I applied leftover paint from our main bathroom renovation. The shade is Postmodern Mauve by Behr.

The first step was sorting the arts and crafts materials. I purchased this over-the-door hanging organizer from Amazon to hold markers, paints, brushes, notebooks, glue sticks, etc.

Mesh pockets are excellent as everything remains sorted yet visible. I’ve discovered that craft storage isn’t effective when items are concealed, as we forget what we possess!

Next, I ordered a pair of these sliding bin organizers from Target, along with sliding bins (similar). I utilized one organizer for beads, jewelry-making supplies, paper, stickers, and coloring books. The bins are adequately sized but not so deep that items become lost.

I also discovered these gold bin clip labels from Amazon and used a chalk marker to label them. It can be easily wiped off if I wish to modify the label!

Lastly, I found this adorable divided bin for organizing crayons, markers, colored pencils, and scissors. It’s much easier to locate colors due to the smaller compartments.

The subsequent task was to arrange our building blocks and board games. I installed a new wall shelf with these attractive gold brackets. If you happen to have a perfectionist mindset like me, they are asymmetrical since I aimed to hit studs to ensure the shelf’s sturdiness!

Two sizable felt containers to organize children’s board games and puzzles on the upper shelf, and these star-shaped fairy lights create a whimsical atmosphere.

The additional sliding bin organizer was ideal for our wooden blocks, marble run, and Calico Critters. This setup is significantly more practical compared to our last arrangement because the small bins (similar) are convenient to detach and carry.

Lastly, I added a gold accordion hook rack to hold a few coats for visitors. You could also utilize them to hang painting smocks or aprons!
