Teen Boys Bedroom Makeover

I am finally presenting this adolescent boy’s bedroom transformation with you! If you have been tracking along with me on Facebook and Instagram, you have observed some of the advancements and behind-the-scenes glimpses. It has been an enjoyable space to work on and the result has turned it into one of my favorite areas in the home. Landen is fond of it too (which is equally crucial 😉 ).

Room revamps have been a recurring theme in our home over the past few months. It all commenced with Gabrielle’s teen girl’s room transformation and then, I initiated plans for a revamp of our bedroom. I was keen on giving Landen’s space a teenage boy’s room makeover, but he kept insisting he didn’t truly require one. So, I proceeded with our bedroom. We applied a fresh coat of paint to the walls and figured out an optimal way to create a DIY closet door that saved us a substantial amount of space in our area.

We were making significant headway in our bedroom and then we encountered a setback.

The bed I ordered was misplaced in transit and they weren’t able to locate it. I had to hustle and discover a new bed option, but it wouldn’t arrive for more than a month! The bed was the next phase in our makeover, so I found myself in a bind. I couldn’t install the new sconces or determine what additional furniture we would require until the bed was set up. Stuck in the progress, I chose to commence Landen’s bedroom makeover. I began removing everything from his room even before I had an actual plan. Nothing like a bit of frustration to kick-start another project and bring it to completion.

Landen didn’t have as many preferences as Gabrielle did with her transformation. I had to determine different methods to engage him and find out what he desired. I would present him with ideas, samples, and color swatches of various items, and he would indicate whether he liked them or not. That significantly assisted me in establishing a direction for his space. His preferred color is green (like his mom 😉 ). I wanted to paint his walls in green.

I gathered numerous samples of different green hues and he was particularly attracted to the darker shades. That delighted me, but Matt was a bit apprehensive. Landen has a compact room, and Matt believed the darker hue would make it appear smaller and dungeon-like. I urged him to have faith in me. I think dark colors get an unfair reputation. They shouldn’t. They can be stunning in various spaces, and I feel they deserve to be utilized more frequently.

When Landen and I were reviewing darker green shades, one of them truly caught our attention.

We liked the color, but we both thought it might be overly dark. So, I acquired two more samples of the same hue but mixed one at 50% and another at 25%. I applied those two shades on the wall alongside the original color to see what we preferred. The entire family cast their votes and we all chose the same hue. We favored “Thyme Green” (mixed at 25%) IT WAS FLAWLESS!

Once we had all the walls painted, it was time to focus on the cedar-planked wall. Landen is passionate about basketball. When we were discussing ideas for his room, he liked the notion of incorporating wood planks on the wall to resemble a basketball court. He also thought that if I added wood planks to the wall, we should paint on a 3-point line and a free-throw line. I informed him that we wouldn’t be doing that, but I would gladly add some wood to one of the walls in his space. I decided to plank the back wall of his room only, from floor to ceiling. It looked fantastic when it was finished.

We utilized the tongue and groove cedar boards for the wall. Tongue and groove panels make it incredibly simple to install. Matt did have to trim them, but we weren’t spacing them out like we did with the DIY shiplap in our foyer. It was a relatively straightforward project and the result looks marvelous!

Once the cedar-planked wall was complete, the closet was the next task. If you have been around for a while, you know that we’re not fans of the bifold closet doors that were original to the house. Having compact bedrooms necessitates creative thinking with every square inch you possess. The bifold doors consumed too much space in our bedrooms so we devised a new sliding closet door for Gabrielle’s room and a DIY closet door in our room. Landen’s closet is somewhat different in that there isn’t a way for a sliding door to operate on his closet. Thus, we eliminated the bifold doors and incorporated an old dresser into the closet. Matt constructed some shelves on the right side for additional storage as well.

We hope to eventually conceal the hanging area of the closet, but we haven’t devised an excellent solution yet. So, I continued with the transformation as though the closet would remain open as it has since we took out the bi-fold doors. I painted the dresser in one of my preferred Dixie Belle Paint shades and added 12″ Studio Cabinet Pull in Matte Black from Hickory Hardware. The dresser looks wonderful in the newly transformed room. It still astonishes me what a fresh paint color and some new hardware can accomplish. You don’t have to complicate things. Start with the simple elements and observe what the result is.

Following the closet, I commenced strategizing what would be placed in the space. We were starting anew, so we required everything. I began with some simpler items that I was certain would be included. The bedding came first. While we were renovating Landen’s area, he was resting on the trundle section of Gabrielle’s bed, and he adored the Beddy’s bedding. I desired to surprise him with a set of his own. You can read all about our affection for Beddy’s Beds and view a video guide that illustrates what the bedding is and why it is so remarkable. I opted for the “Naturally Boho”bedding for Landen’s space and added a surprise with the large print basketball pillowcase. He was thrilled with the surprise.

Beddy’s is ideal for the decor of Landen’s room since I knew I would be selecting a bed with storage underneath. The Beddy’s bedding does not hang over the bed. It contoured snugly around the mattress and always looks appealing. Excellent for kids. It is a bundled bed set. You receive the fitted sheet, top sheet, and comforter all together. Each set is handcrafted, and there is a minky option that our kids adore. It is incredibly easy to clean, available in various colors and designs, and accommodates all bed sizes; from twin to king.

I received numerous inquiries regarding Beddy’s when I first introduced Gabrielle’s set, so I created a brief video to demonstrate how the bedding functions, what we appreciate about it, and to address all the questions I received about it. The bedding was a simple decision.

Next, I had to select a bed. I was certain I wanted a black bed to match the new aesthetic of this room. This was an excellent, budget-friendly choice and looks great. However, I must admit that I will be searching for an antique iron bed, and if I discover one at a fair price, I’ll replace the one I picked out for him.

Not only did I have to find a bed, but I also acquired new mattresses for all the renovations in our residence. I read some favorable reviews for this mattress, so I selected it for Landen and Gabrielle’s room. They are both fond of them, and Matt and I have both rested on them and believe they are quite comfortable. I want to evaluate how well they endure and their condition in six months and a year to provide a comprehensive review, but for now, they are FANTASTIC!

I had sorted out the bed, mattress, and bedding. Now, I needed to select a new fan. I picked this one. I wanted to keep it simple and black. This fan comes with a remote that controls both the light and the fan. He will appreciate it as the warmer weather approaches.

The rug for Landen’s space was something that required a bit more time to locate. I truly wanted a rug that would cover a majority of his room, and when Matt was measuring, he measured shorter. UGH! It’s fine. I managed to discover this Safavieh Natural Fiber Kentigern Border Area Rug and it looks fantastic in this newly decorated room. I do wish it were a tad larger, but I wasn’t about to deal with the hassle of returning it. We simply adjusted it more in the room and had less underneath his bed. It suffices. I preferred a lighter, neutral rug in his room due to the dark green walls. This rug is available in many shades. It’s a great natural rug if you’ve been searching for an affordable option.

The curtain rod was something I showcased in this video when I took you along shopping at six of my favorite stores. The curtains were a find from Home Goods. If you were following this makeover journey on Instagram, you know that I had to purchase a replacement set of these curtains due to a paint mishap. It was a stressful day and a long story to delve into here. Do ensure you’re following along with me on Instagram too! I’m always sharing something there.

I still needed to introduce more storage to this teenage boy’s bedroom renovation. We adored this shelving unit. It fit the area perfectly and provides him ample shelves to display some of his cherished items. The shelves Matt installed in the closet are useful too, but since it’s such a compact room, he required additional storage. I added some playful items to the shelves such as the vintage suitcase (hello! enclosed storage), my beloved vintage green box, wooden Connect 4 game, vintage trophies, a small globe, and a vintage clock. There are other items on the shelves as well. I thought a lot of this might just be for me to take final photos with, but Landen liked everything, and I think they may remain for a while. 🙂

We spray-painted the basketball hoop Matt crafted for Landen’s previous room and

hung it over his bed. Rather than the vivid orange border, I spray-coated it black for this adolescent boy’s room transformation. It appears so much more appealing in my opinion. We also had to incorporate some type of hooks for coats and backpacks in the space. Naturally, I selected my preferred Bungalow Double Hooks from Hickory Hardware. Matt affixed them to a piece of cedar we had stashed in the garage, so he simply needed to secure the cedar board to the wall along with both screw holes each hook includes. I also included two of the old stools we found at an estate sale into the room.

I can’t express how thrilled we are with this adolescent boy’s room transformation. Landen remarked that he had no clue how desperately his room required a makeover until he saw the completed space. #missionaccomplished. I realize there will be certain elements that I will modify and add over the next months, but for the moment, this is our current state. It’s already quite good, yet I will be on the lookout for more vintage suitcases to store beneath his bed, and I need to find a wicker laundry hamper along with some small boxes or baskets for the shelving unit. No transformation is ever truly “finished” here. It’s always progressing, although I’d say this one is quite impressive for now.
