IKEA Trofast Lego Storage

I’ll start by showcasing the Lego storage system I selected, but keep reading for additional ideas below!

These are IKEA TROFAST units. I acquired them roughly a year ago to manage the Lego chaos. Additionally, I picked small bins (white) to house individual sets and larger bins (gray) to accommodate other toys.

Pro tip: There are numerous TROFAST configurations to select from, according to the dimensions and layout of your room!

We have deemed the IKEA TROFAST system to be durable and practical. These comprise three individual shelves that are not linked, but I secured them to the wall to prevent tipping or shifting. Attaching to the wall is somewhat inconvenient, but the safety aspect was crucial for me. Moreover, it stops Legos from slipping between or behind the shelves!

Pro tip: Wall mounting hardware is included. Where I couldn’t locate a stud, I utilized toggle bolts and washers to enhance the sturdiness of the setup.

Eventually, we encountered a scenario where we had to double or triple up the sets in the smaller bins. But no worries–I possess an organizing solution for that which I will disclose below!

Allow me to introduce you to your new favorite companion for keeping Lego sets intact: these mesh zipper bags! They are durable, reusable, and an excellent budget-friendly choice. Mine cost less than 50 cents each. Here is a comparable option that features various bag sizes and labels.

Our Lego sets were generally organized, but we had surplus pieces lying around. So, I enlisted my son to assist me in sorting the sets into the bags. We genuinely had a blast doing it!

Here are some steps to follow when categorizing and storing Lego sets:

1. Place each set into its own zipper bag.

These are the mesh zipper bags that I utilized. Include the instruction manual inside the bag to keep everything together! The exception would be if you possess a very large set that requires its own bin; in that case, we did not utilize a bag.

2. Categorize sets by type.

This is an enjoyable step to engage your kids! Create stacks of bagged sets classified by category, such as space, vehicles, animals, Star Wars, Mario, etc.

3. Select a bin for each type.

Depending on how many Lego sets you have of each variant, choose an appropriately sized bin. We managed to stack 3-4 bags atop each other in the smaller bins, and file 5-6 bags in the larger bins.

4. Label the bins.

Lastly, we used adhesive business card holders and printed labels using the Classic Business Cards template in Mac Pages (Templates > Stationary > Business Cards). Alternatively, you could handwrite on business cards or print bin labels using a Cricut.
