- Kraft paper roll
- Permanent marker
- Twine or any sort of string
- Scissors
- Bobby pins or paper clips to secure the bottom roll in place
- A flattened cardboard box, newspapers, or drop cloth*
*This is a precaution so you don’t mark your floor/table with ink!
DIY Calligraphy Sign Instructions
1. Prepare the Kraft Roll
Commence by unrolling your Kraft paper to your preferred dimensions and use a few heavy items to keep it extended. Allow for some extra to create the lower roll, then utilize paperclips or bobby pins to hold that roll securely in position.
*Crucial: Place your flattened box or another liner beneath the scroll to avoid your permanent marker from seeping onto your floor or table. I utilized a Target box because I always have a surplus of those 😉
2. Design Your Quote
Now the enjoyable part: crafting your quote! I selected a phrase from one of my beloved novels,The Great Gatsby. Use a seasonal or motivational quote that brings you joy. Here are a few additional autumn quotes that resonate with me:

Once you have selected your quote, draft it in pencil. Following that, trace the pencil with your permanent marker carefully. If you haven’t practiced calligraphy before, do not worry! Just write in cursive, and we will enhance it in the next step. (If you find it challenging to perfect your writing style or arrangement, practice on a sheet of paper first.)
3. Transform Your Cursive Into Calligraphy
Now comes the enchanting step, where we convert everyday writing into “calligraphy”! The fundamental concept is to enhance any line that is a downstroke. Review your quote, letter by letter, and thicken any line where your pen moves downward.
Suddenly, your handwriting appears considerably more elegant! This stage demands a bit of patience; however, make an effort to progress slowly and maintain uniformity with the width of your downstrokes.
Voila! Remove the pencil marks, and you are nearly done.
4. Attach Twine for Hanging the Scroll
The final phase is to pass your twine through the upper roll to enable hanging your scroll. This may pose a challenge, so you might want to tape the twine’s end to a pencil and wiggle it through the top roll. I opted to double my twine for added strength (thus, I threaded it through the upper roll two times). Then, I cut and secured the twine, ensuring the large “loop” was positioned to hide the knot inside the top roll.
Suspend your scroll using a picture hook or nail suitable for your wall. Then, take a step back and relish the view!

DIY Calligraphy Scroll Sign for Autumn Farmhouse Decoration
One aspect I particularly love regarding this calligraphy scroll is that you can effortlessly switch the quote for various seasons or events. Simply roll up the lower section of the scroll to conceal your initial quote, secure the bottom roll with a clip or pin, and begin anew.
