Simple Patio Decorating Ideas

Transform your patio from ordinary to stunning with these effortless patio embellishment concepts! I’m also presenting my favorite patio decor items from Safavieh.

Greetings, friends! I’m not sure about you, but with summer approaching, I’ve been motivated to spruce up our patio for the season. We own a newly constructed home, and a few years back, we had a basic concrete patio laid, but we never dedicated much time to embellishing it, aside from a dining set. However, that altered last weekend when I finally got the chance to style this area for outdoor leisure and entertainment! I’m thrilled to collaborate with Safavieh to present straightforward patio embellishment suggestions along with some of my preferred outdoor essentials and accessories from their collections. Let’s dive in!

Basic Patio Before

To kick things off, here’s a photo of the patio before! As I previously mentioned, it was quite basic with just a metal dining table and chairs. We did have cushions for the seats, which aren’t shown here, and we once possessed an umbrella that, unfortunately, succumbed to the strong winds in our backyard. I was eager to incorporate both functional and decorative aspects to prepare this area for the summer season!

I’m absolutely thrilled with this “after”! My intention was to craft a welcoming and practical area, and I believe we accomplished it, as we have already tested it with family visiting last weekend! We’ve savored several meals out here and it is delightful to witness how a few minor adjustments created such an impact. Below is a compilation of all the items I utilized, and afterward, I will elaborate on each product along with my patio decorating suggestions!

Items Utilized:

Easy Patio Decoration Concepts

1. Outdoor Mat

A primary addition I was thrilled to include is an outdoor area mat. A mat anchors a space, creates a sense of purpose, and offers a cozy area for a smooth transition from the inside. Our kitchen is just inside the sliding doors, and since my children enjoy coming in and out (perhaps a bit too often!) it’s great to have the mat for their little feet. This mat from Safavieh’s Courtyard Collection is crafted from polypropylene, polyester, and latex to withstand the elements, and I adore the navy for a beachy aesthetic.

2. Planters

Next on the list are planters! As our house is a new construction, we lack many plants or trees aside from some landscaping around the edges of our patio. Planters are an excellent means to introduce greenery (or blooms) in this context! I opted for Safavieh’s Alia and Kaston planters. The Alia makes a bold impression with its sizable structure and contemporary style, while I appreciate the scalloped edges of the Kaston. With the weather still warming up in Ohio, I styled a few of my artificial plants for these images but am eager to introduce live plants! Tip: For larger planters, consider using heavy fillers (such as rocks) or light fillers (foam/plastic containers, packaging materials) at the base to occupy space.

3. Umbrella

Our patio receives direct afternoon sunlight and can become extremely warm in the summer, making an umbrella essential. I selected Safavieh’s Elegant Valance umbrella in beige to provide a subtle contrast with our gray exterior. The petal edging is quite lovely, and the dimensions (6.5 x 10 ft) are ideal for covering a rectangular table. It also has a tilting feature!

4. Decorative Cushions

At last, cushions! We previously had the ivory pillows that accompanied our dining arrangement, so I opted for a variety of cream and beige cushions to create a neutral, subtly bohemian aesthetic. The Florini, Grema, and Mari cushions each contribute texture to our patio area and are perfect for layering and relaxation. When picking cushions, aim to select one with a pattern, one solid, and one textured for a seamless mix. Note: Given that our yard is highly exposed to the elements, we take the seat cushions and pillows inside when they’re not in use; thus, I opted for “indoor” cushions in this area.

Are you enhancing your exterior areas for the summer season? Ours has been a journey, but it is delightful to witness it come together bit by bit each year.
